We were beginning to wonder where Maggie was, she has been pretty much absent during the Washington state and Maine campaigns, but the witch is back!

Hofstra University hosted a debate on marriage equality between National Organziation for Marriage (NOM) President Maggie Gallagher and Marriage Equality New York Board President Cathy Marino-Thomas last week.

Said Gallagher to Marino-Thomas: “[Your relationship with your parter] may be better, but it’s not a marriage. It may be better than a marriage. It’s probably better than my marriage, to hear you talk about it. I wouldn’t talk about my marriage in such glowing terms.”

Near 200,000 marched on Washington last week and another 3,000 crammed into the Washington Convention Center to hear President Obama speak. But we are only effective in both places if our words meet our actions. Cheering, slogans, black ties and shiny shoes do not make a movement.

Our first test as a revitalized community is upon us. In early November voters will flock to the polls in the states of Maine and Washington and vote on our freedom. Hard to believe in America that other citizens can deny Americans freedom by the ballot box. However, that is the reality and we must rise to fight and protect our rights in both of those states.

What can you do?

-If every marcher in Washington, D.C. this past weekend just gave $15 to Washington and $15 to Maine, that would come to over $3,000,000 for each state. Let me repeat, for your total of $30 we can raise over three million dollars for each state.
-If you live in the Northeast or Northwest or have vacation time, get to either of those two states and volunteer for a week or a weekend.
-In some states like Florida, they are setting up phone banks to call Maine voters from their home area. Show up and start making those calls.
-Most importantly don’t make good people beg for your help or wait for an engraved invitation to participate in this epic struggle. Show some initiative, send your two two donations and even raise more from your family and friends.

Where do you donate?

For Maine: https://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/5841/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KEY=2566
For Washington: https://www.upwardstech.net/approvereferendum71

The races in both states are neck and neck. You can’t afford to wait and see what the latest polls show. People are already voting now and we need your dollars and efforts NOW. Don’t make the same mistake we made in California. Give now, give often and fight hard!

THIS PISSES ME OFF!!!, all he does is TALK TALK TALK, and no action! Yes,  he has given people that work for the fed extra benefits, but guess what Obama, not many of us work for the fed!

And to all those people that say “He’ll get around to gay rights once the economy and health care reform is fixed”, here’s a news flash!!!  Gay rights will always be at the bottom of Obama’s “things to do” list because the only time he cares about us is when he wants something FROM US, like your hard earned MONEY.

President Barack Obama will focus “at the right time” on how to overturn the “don’t ask, don’t tell” ban on gays serving openly in the military, his national security adviser said Sunday.

“I don’t think it’s going to be — it’s not years, but I think it will be teed up appropriately,” James Jones said.

The Democratic-led Congress is considering repealing the 1993 law. Action isn’t expected on the issue until early next year.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., recently wrote Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates asked to share their views and recommendations on the contentious policy. In Sept. 24 letters, Reid also asked for a review of the cases of two U.S. officers who were discharged from the military because of their sexuality.

“At a time when we are fighting two wars, I do not believe we can afford to discharge any qualified individual who is willing to serve our country,” Reid wrote.

Jones said Obama “has an awful lot on his desk. I know this is an issue that he intends to take on at the appropriate time. And he has already signaled that to the Defense Department. The Defense Department is doing the things it has to do to prepare, but at the right time, I’m sure the president will take it on.”

As a candidate, Obama signaled support for repealing the law. To the disappointment of gay-rights supporters, he has yet to made a move since taking office in January. The White House has said it will not stop the military from dismissing gays and lesbians who acknowledge their sexuality.

Last year, 634 members of the military were discharged for being gay, or .045 percent of the active-duty U.S. force, according to an Aug. 14 congressional report.

The largest number of gays who were ousted under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy came in 2001, when 1,227 were discharged, or .089 of the force.

The House is considering legislation to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell” and allow people who have been discharged under the policy to rejoin the military.

Jones appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

This is great, however lets remember Bill Clinton ALSO attended that shindig and we all know what he did to the gay community.

To the thousands of people planning on marching in Washington, WTFBLOG thinks you are AWESOME!

On the eve of the National Equality March this Saturday, President Obama will speak at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual dinner in Washington D.C.:

Obamahrc “Mr. Obama’s appearance on Saturday at the annual dinner for the Human Rights Campaign, a leading gay rights advocacy group, represents a significant show of support for gay rights at a time when many prominent gay and lesbian activists have been questioning the president’s commitment to their issues…While it remains to be seen what Mr. Obama’s appearance at the dinner will do to his standing in the eyes of gay rights activists, his speech may mollify some of their concerns. His appearance will mark only the second time a sitting president has spoken to the Human Rights Campaign. The first time was more in 1997 when Bill Clinton spoke to the group. That was the first time a sitting president had ever addressed a gay rights organization. A person with knowledge of Mr. Obama’s plans confirmed his appearance at the dinner. But this person spoke on the condition of anonymity because a formal announcement is expected later today.”

The following day, thousands will march in D.C. demanding that Obama fulfill his campaign promises.

I certainly hope Obama has some big news or additional plans for the following day because choosing the black tie dinner over the grassroots march certainly won’t garner him much respect unless he does.

Okay, I lied! It’s going to take more than being left-handed to be American President (Unless you’re George W. Bush, in which case, it doesn’t take much to be president).

The coincidence is that American presidents since the 1970s have been left-handed, with the exception of George W. Bush. Even former Presidential hopeful John McCain is left-handed!

What is it about being left-handed and the American presidency? Is it just coincidence or are we left-handed people just power hungry?

Here’s a short list:

  • Alexander the Great
  • Barack Obama
  • Bill Clinton
  • Fidel Castro
  • Gandhi
  • Hugo Chavez
  • Jack the Ripper
  • Napoleon Bonaparte
  • Osama bin Laden
  • Queen Elizabeth I

Does this really prove we lefties are power hungry? Well, not exactly but if you look at the names on there, these are and were some pretty powerful individuals! And I have the honour of adding myself on a list where Osama bin Laden and Jack the Ripper are in! GO LEFTIES!

The point here is, and it might be obvious, is that lefties are probably more inclined to be intelligent, powerful individuals and NOT just for the American Presidency as the above list shows.

WTF! And I Thought a B was a bad grade! After reading this you will understand why President Obama is emphasizing America’s infrastructure so much. It seems like an awful lot of jobs could be created with all of the repair and upgrades that we so desperately need!

Society of Civil Engineers gives America’s infrastructure a “D”

By Cynthia Sewell – cmsewell@idahostatesman.com

Edition Date: 01/28/09

Decades of underfunding and inattention have left the nation with an infrastructure that is poorly maintained, unable to meet current and future demands and in need of $2.2 trillion in repairs.

That’s the conclusion of American Society of Civil Engineer’s 2009 report card for America’s infrastructure, which assigns an overall grade of D to the nation.

Grades ranged from a high of C+ for solid waste to a low of D- for drinking water, inland waterways, levees, roads and wastewater.

Since ASCE’s last report card in 2005 there has been little change in the condition of the nation’s roads, bridges, drinking water systems and other public works, and the cost of improvement has increased by more than half a trillion dollars.

While there has been some improvement in energy since 2005, overall conditions have worsened in aviation, roads and transit.

A panel of 28 civil engineers evaluated each of the 15 categories on the basis of capacity, condition, funding, future need, operation and maintenance, public safety and resilience.

A detailed report, which accompanies the grades released Wednesday, will be released on March 25.

2009 report card for nation’s infrastructure:

Aviation: D

Bridges: C

Dams: D

Drinking water: D-

Hazardous waste: D

Inland waterways: D-

Levees: D-

Public parks and recreation: C-
