Matthew Shepards mother Judy Shepard shares her thoughts  and feelings on the 13th anniversary of her sons death.

Thirteen years ago this week his father, brother and I were at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo., with our firstborn son, Matthew Shepard. He was 21, and dying. Just days before, he had been just like millions of American college students whose names are not known to the world — getting the hang of his new classes, adapting to a new campus, making friends. His father and I thought his biggest challenges were keeping money in his checking account and getting his homework in on time.

But here he was in intensive care, the victim of a terrible, senseless attack at the hands of two other young men who, at some point in their lives, learned it was OK to hate others for being different, to victimize them, to disregard their humanity.

Matt passed away quietly in the early morning hours of Oct. 12, 1998, with his family at his bedside. He died because of violence fueled by anti-gay hatred. For a lot of reasons, some of which we will probably never quite understand, the world had been watching, praying for him, and voicing their outrage.

October cannot go by anymore, and never will again, without us wondering what might have been, for us and for so many other families, if hatred of gay, and lesbian, and bisexual, and transgendered people, and all those whom others simply think might be, had been rooted out long ago.

They said “There’s a storm coming”

Now its OUR TURN.

Time and time again we wonder how such hateful organizations such as the National Organization For Marriage gain and keep followers (we call them sheep).

Offline, they get them in churches, but online its with social networking sites, Facebook and Myspace.

Now think for a second, they control what they want its sheep to hear offline, how do they do it online?

Easy.

They control whats permitted onto their group pages.

If you go into their group and and say you have been with your partner of 10 years, have children and would love to get married, they will erase your post…do you think the same happens to the post where you promptly get called a child molester and a pervert?

No.

Whats beautiful about this, is that by allowing this, they are breaking Facebooks “Statement of Rights and Responsibilities

Section 3.7 clearly states:

You will not post content that is hateful, threatening, pornographic, or that contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.

Section 3.10

You will not use Facebook to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious, or discriminatory.

Do you like the fact that they are allowed to break the rules and will continue to do so until WE complain?

Do you like the fact they are using propaganda to take away your rights?

Please join the group, and HELP get NOM banned from Facebook, if they are banned from Facebook they are unable to to spread hate and propaganda, this will HELP the LGBT get the rights they DESERVE!

I often sit and wonder how organizations like NOM get so many followers, and I beleive I have worked it out. They target peoples ignorance and lack of education, you fill their brains to capacity  with so many fabricated lies until it gets to the point that the sheep is now unable to think for themselves.

Maggie Gallagher - President Of NOM and Head Of Brainwashing

Maggie Gallagher - President Of NOM and Head Of Brainwashing

But it doesn’t stop there! Oh no, that would be way too easy for them! After spending so much time brainwashing their victims do you think they are going to let any outsiders come along and fuck up their hard work? Not a chance in hell!

Now we all know about North Korea and how their President Kim Jong-il just LOVES to dictate what his people see, hear and think, and NOM is doing the same, they do not want its followers really knowing whats going on in the world, they do NOT want them knowing the harm and cruelty they are inflicting upon other people, they do NOT want its followers to think for themselves.

How do we know this? myself and others have taken it upon ourselves to try and save these sheep before they are sent off to slaughter, we try and educate them that what they are doing is wrong, and everytime we post something on their facebook page, it promptly gets deleted.

I urge you to head over to their facebook page, and post something positive in regards to the gay community, and every time they remove one of your comments, go to your myspace/facebook/twitter and invite people to also go post something positive, if everyone did this, the person in charge of that page will spend more time erasing comments than spreading hate.

I mean, what do you have to lose?

EDIT: Why stop with facebook! Head over to NOM’s Official blog!

Could this be the start of a decline for the every popular Perez Hilton, we hope not. But it makes you wonder since The Matthew Shepard Foundation doesn’t even want his money, personally I am very surprised.

STATEMENT FROM MATTHEW SHEPARD FOUNDATION REGARDING PEREZHILTON.COM

The Matthew Shepard Foundation was surprised to learn this morning via media reports that blogger Perez Hilton (Mario Lavandeira) has announced he plans to donate, to our organization, the proceeds of a lawsuit he is contesting over an altercation which has been widely reported in recent days.

We had no advance notice or contact from Mr. Hilton or his representatives regarding this proposal, nor any communication since he posted this plan to his website.

We do not know the details of the lawsuit, whether it has been filed, the nature of his claims or the likely outcome. But because the lawsuit presumably involves the physical attack prompted by Mr. Hilton’s admitted use of an anti-gay slur, the Foundation will be unable to accept any funds obtained in such a manner.

We very much appreciate the generosity of the offer to support our continuing work to memorialize Matthew through activism in defense of sexual minorities and in favor of understanding, compassion, and acceptance. But because so much of our work involves education to reduce the use of hateful language against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, or those so perceived, it would be inappropriate for us to benefit financially from circumstances in which such a verbal attack was involved.

While we applaud Mr. Hilton’s apology to the LGBT community and their loved ones for his use of such a slur, we also feel compelled to point out that use of epithets can often lead to physical violence, as it appears it may have in this case, and that the Matthew Shepard Foundation has worked for more than 10 years to bring to people’s attention the consequences of hateful or intolerant language.

Thanks to OMGBLOG for this:D

Rep. Virginia Foxx Called Matthew Shepard Hate Crime “A Hoax” (Bitch)

Published April 29, 2009 2:10 pm ET by Media Matters Action Network

On April 29, 2009, in a speech on the House floor, Rep. Virginia Foxx claimed that Matthew Shepard’s death was merely the result of a robbery gone bad. While his killers Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson did rob him, they also admitted that they were well aware of his sexual orientation and pretended they were gay to lure him away from the bar he was in at the time. The most striking feature of the case, of course, is that during the course of a normal, simple robbery, the victim is not generally beaten, tied to a post, and left for dead.

Matthew Shepard’s Death Was A Hate Crime, Not Simply A Robbery

Rep. Foxx: “The bill was named after a very unfortunate incident that happened, where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of robbery. It wasn’t because he was gay. The bill was named for him, the hate crimes bill was named for him, but it’s, it’s really a hoax, that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills.”[House Floor Speech, 4/29/09]

All the evidence clearly indicates that this was a vicious hate crime, not a robbery gone bad.

Shepard’s Killers Lured Him “Out Of A Bar By Saying They Were Gay.” According to the New York Times: “According to the local police and prosecutors, the two men lured Mr. Shepard out of a bar by saying they were gay. Then, the Laramie police say, the pair kidnapped Mr. Shepard, pistol-whipped him with a .357 Magnum, and left him tied to a ranch fence for 18 hours until a passing bicyclist spotted Mr. Shepard, who was unconscious.” [New York Times, 10/12/98]

The “Robbery” Myth Was Debunked During The Trial Of Matthew Shepard’s Killers. As reported by Slate a few weeks after the Shepard murder trial: “Speculation has persisted for the past year that Matthew Shepard, rather than being the victim of gay-bashing, might really have been nothing more than a hapless robbery victim who was exploited by gay activists to reap unwarranted sympathy and advance their own agenda to enact hate-crimes legislation. Statements made by one of the convicted killers, which were revealed for the first time Thursday, reveal these accounts to be false. […] The most significant revelations emerged from the secret confession of Henderson, obtained just three days after his plea bargain. Henderson debunked the portrayal of Shepard that has gained currency the past few weeks. Had he testified in court as scheduled at McKinney’s trial, he would have blown apart the watered-down ’gay panic’ defense pursued to the end by McKinney’s legal team.” [Slate.com, 11/6/99, emphasis added]

Detective: “They Knew Damn Well He Was Gay.” The Slate article went on to report: “According to detectives who interviewed both of the convicted murderers, there is no evidence that Shepard made any sexual advances to the pair — and the detectives dismissed the idea that the murder was the mere result of a robbery gone bad. ’Far from that!’ scoffed Sgt. Rob DeBree, the chief investigator in the case. ’They knew damn well he was gay … It started out as a robbery and burglary, and I sincerely believe the other activity was because he was gay.’” [Slate.com, 11/6/99; emphasis added]

Rep. Foxx – does that sound like just a robbery to you?

What do you think about this? Is this another CLASSIC example of how backwards Republican Party is? Or is she simply gagging for some press?

Description
We are calling for a nationwide strike and economic boycott by all Gays and Lesbians AND OUR ALLIES, whether straight, bisexual or transgendered, on December 10th, 2008, which is International Human Rights Day.

HOW?
1. Strike: call in gay, shut down your business, take the day off.
2. Boycott: don’t spend money, particularly at establishments that support discrimination.
3. Volunteer: show the world that our message is about love, not hate.
4. Communicate: spread the word. We need everyone’s support.

WHY?
Because LGBT workers, business owners, consumers and taxpayers contribute over $700 billion to the U.S. economy each year. We are a vital part of American society and should not be treated as second class citizens without the same rights as every other American.

Because strikes and boycotts have been a powerful weapon in the history of non-violent and legal protests.
See http://www. pbs. org/now/society/boycott. html

Because marriage should be a Right for all Americans, including gay men and lesbians, regardless of gender, race OR religion.

Because until ALL are equal, NONE are equal.

WHY THE NAME “A DAY WITHOUT GAYS”? The name is derived from A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN, a powerful film that examined the value of Latino immigrants to American Society.

My thoughts:

I think this is a peaceful and excellent way to make a statement, good on you for taking the lead in this effort!! To all those saying this is a stupid idea or that it is not necessary — think again. When Change does come, you will have these courageous individuals to thank when you reap the benefits of their labor as you sat on the sidelines. I do not believe in separate, but equal, because it is NOT equal.
We are arguing over semantics here, this is my solution:

The word “marriage” is derived from religion, so let religious organizations conduct and recognize marriages. Where the government is concerned, define a union between a woman and a man, a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, as a CIVIL UNION all across the board with equal benefits and rights. Sounds simple right? Too bad it is not that easy. Let’s resolve this issue America, so we can unite to find resolve to the issues we all face; health care, the war, education, and the economy.
We have a lot of work to do!!

I am sick and fucking tired of ignorant people being the tone of the McCain campaign. I’m irate that John McCain and Sarah Palin started talking about Obama as though he were a terrorist. We always knew that fearmongering would be part of the GOP platform, but this? This is emotional terrorism. Yes, I said it. They are trying to terrorize our emotions and our deepest fears by lying and pointing out things that are ludicrous and threatening someone’s life. Kill him, bomb him, he’s a terrorist, an Arab, a Muslim. We do not need this bullshit in our politics. Our country is headed down the shitter and people are talking about murdering the one man who even seems to have any clue how to fix it.

Sure, John McCain took the microphone away from a woman who called Obama an Arab. Does that stop him from instilling people with doubts anyway? No. “We need to know who the real Obama is.” We DO know who the real Obama is. Who the hell are you, John? Besides, of course, a liar and a being who feeds on the fears of others.

And John McCain is PROUD of these people. In last night’s debate he said, “I’m proud of the people that come to our rallies….there have been things yelled at your rallies, Senator Obama, that I’m not happy about either”. Like what? Has anyone threatened John McCain’s life at an Obama rally? Anyone? No! John McCain has to say he’s proud of these people because they’re the only ones he has left. And heaven knows, we don’t want to scare away the racist nutjobs. After all, they get to vote too.

John McCain brought up Rep. John Lewis and his statement that McCain and Palin are “sowing the seeds of hatred”. And he’s right! Why hasn’t McCain said that Sarah Palin’s statement about Obama palling around with Bill Ayers is ridiculous slander? For someone whose Keating 5 skeletons are scarier than any supposed involvement Obama could have possibly had when he was 8 years old (the time Ayers was with Weather Underground), don’t you think you might just want to keep your mouth shut about questionable associations?

It’s all about a snowball effect. You start with the small lies: “Obama called Palin a pig”. Move to bigger lies: “Obama wants to teach sex to Kindergartners” and then it becomes “Obama pals with terrorists”. John McCain’s campaign seems to be run by the worst kind of people: lying, unethical, emotional terrorists. We are in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and what McCain has at his rallies aren’t people concerned about this – they are people concerned about killing and bombing Barack Obama. He is a Christian, American citizen. How anyone gets away with saying such threatening and terrible things about someone who has been serving our country, has a family who needs him, and is only trying to help this country gets back on his feet is beyond me.

Barack Obama is not the terrorist, Mr. McCain. Your supporters are. Stop NOW before something happens that you can not reverse because you failed to repudiate your own VP.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Stop the hate, stop the racism, and stop praising your supporters who are encouraging violence and murder. Be the man we saw in 2000 and have some fucking conviction for what’s right, not just what you think is right for you. Because, Senator McCain, what seems to be right for you is wrong for the rest of us. So practice what you preach and put the COUNTRY FIRST!
