Just in time to kick-off of the holiday shopping season, HRC is releasing our annual buyers guide that rates hundreds of popular American brands on their businesses’ treatment of LGBT employees. “Buying for Equality 2010” divides businesses and their consumer products into red, yellow and green categories based on their score on the HRC Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index, a nationally recognized benchmark of LGBT inclusion. The guide — previous versions of which have been viewed and downloaded more than 300,000 times — is available for download and viewing online at www.hrc.org/buyersguide.

The LGBT community is estimated to have $712 billion in buying power this year, according to research by Witeck-Combs Communications and MarketResearch.com. A recent study by Witeck-Combs/Harris Interactive also found that 78 percent of LGBT people are extremely or very likely to consider brands that are known to provide equal workplace benefits for their employees, including LGBT workers.

Said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese:

“Congress is currently considering the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a critical piece of workplace legislation that will include our community. Until all LGBT Americans get fair treatment in the workplace, we must support businesses that support us. By purchasing products from businesses that support LGBT equality, shoppers send a clear message to businesses that their support, or lack thereof, will directly impact their bottom line.”

“From determining which car to purchase, to the right holiday gift for the kids, to everyday grocery shopping, this guide harnesses the power of equality-minded shoppers. At this moment it’s critically important that businesses hear that their customers support businesses that support us,” said Solmonese.

Fair-minded consumers are also encouraged to write to businesses to either thank them for their support, ask them revise their policies, or encourage them to participate in the Corporate Equality Index. More information can be found at www.hrc.org/consumeradvocacy.

Bravo tells us on-screen that Chef Academy cast member Emmanuel DelCour is a “graphic artist,” and on its web site says he “has acted in commercials and television series and worked as a personal trainer” and “enjoys swimming cage free with Great White Sharks, drawing and graphic design.”

But guess what else he likes to do? Let’s turn to always-reliable Wikipedia’s entry for Jean Val Jean, who’s “the premier straight porn practitioner of analingus on female co-stars.” They are the same person, according to IMDB’s entry for Emmanuel, which details his TV work (most notably an appearance on CSI) and puts his previous career more gracefully, saying he “made a successful cross-over from modeling in straight adult entertainment.”

The show will apparently address this—the season preview shows one of the cast members looking at a computer and saying, “one of our guys is a porn star”—but for now, Dudetube has NSFW screen captures that show “Emmanuel DelCour was prolific straight porn star Jean Val Jean in his past life.” Porn.com has info about Val Jean’s career and clips like one in which he describes how the French determine perfect breast size.

The day before elections, Judge Walker, who is presiding over the federal challenge to Prop 8, held a hearing over a dispute concerning the proponents of Prop 8 and their unwillingness to hand over certain ordered internal campaign communications regarding messaging to the plaintiffs.

These documents are vital to the plaintiffs in their effort to prove that those responsible for Prop 8 are not concerned about the welfare of the state, traditional marriage or the weak argument of protecting procreation, but that they acted out of animus toward the LGBT population.

On November 11, Judge Walker ordered they hand over the documents, stating that they were not protected from disclosure.

Well, it gets better. They still haven’t handed over the documents. According to California attorney Rick Xiao at blog Proposition 8 and the Right to Marry:
Today Judge Walker dropped the hammer on Prop. 8 proponents and ordered immediate production of internal communications concerning their campaign strategies and messages to voters. Among other things, Judge Walker admonished Prop. 8 proponents that his previous discovery orders, while being appealed to the Ninth Circuit, remain in effect because the appellate court has not issued a stay. Thus, Prop. 8 proponents risk contempt of the court if they continue to withhold production. According to today’s order, Prop. 8 proponents are ordered to produce additional responsive documents on a rolling basis to conclude not later than the close of fact discovery on November 30, 2009.
Here is the copy of the order, an order he’s had to issue THREE TIMES:

Walker’s Order Compelling Production in Perry v. Schwarzenegger Filed 11-19-09

It really makes you wonder what’s in those documents and what it is they’re trying to hide at the risk of being thrown in jail for contempt.

This January trial is going to be good.

Inti Wara Yassi is an animal refuge in Bolivia who’s aim is to rehabilitate and care for the animals they rescue,  and not just any animals…

Say hello to Sonko, a 3yr old puma.

The Facts: In Bolivia, there are black markets full of wild animals being sold to hotels, private homes and Circuses. These animals are usually obtained by hunting down the parents or group leaders and then taking the babies to be sold in the black markets. In many cases the animals are endangered species. The captured animals are usually kept in small cages, with little or no protection from the elements. Many are malnourished and some badly abused.

This is just rather sick, I would much prefer we sent 200,000 anti-gay marriage supporters over there to be slaughtered instead.

KATMANDU, Nepal — A Hindu festival in which hundreds of thousands of animals are expected to be sacrificed will go ahead as scheduled in southern Nepal despite protests, organizers said Friday.

The Gadhimai festival, celebrated every five years, is attended by many Hindus from India as well as Nepal. More than 200,000 buffaloes, pigs, goats, chickens and pigeons are expected to be slaughtered this year on Nov. 24 and 25.

Organizers said they will not bow to “interference” from animal rights and religious groups that have held protests in Katmandu and in the festival area in Bara district, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of the capital.

“We will not stop this centuries-old tradition now. This is our religion, belief and tradition and we will continue with it no matter what,” said Motilal Kushwa of the organizing committee.

Kushwa said thousands of people have already arrived at the site with animals meant for sacrifice next week.

Participants believe that animal sacrifices for the Hindu goddess Gadhimai will end evil and bring prosperity. Many join the festival from the state of Bihar in India, where animal sacrifices have been banned in some areas.

Critics say the killings are barbaric and conducted in a cruel manner.

Government administrator Taranath Gauram said hundreds of extra policemen have been sent to the area to maintain security and officials do not expect trouble during the festival.

Ram Bahadur Bamjan, a Nepalese teenager revered by many as a reincarnation of Buddha, has joined the campaign against the animal slaughter and plans to visit the festival area to appeal directly to participants to stop the sacrifices.

Bamjan’s followers believe he has been meditating without food and water in the jungles of southern Nepal since 2005. Believers say he spends months without moving, sitting with his eyes closed beneath a tree.
